Dastaan

Our Story

The story is the point.

Dastaan means 'a tale told well'. We set out to cook the India we grew up in — and to tell its stories with the precision a great restaurant demands.

Interior of the haveli dining room

The Haveli

A house with two hundred years in its walls.

We found the haveli half-forgotten behind Mehrauli's lanes, its courtyards open to the sky and its jharokhas still intact. It took three years to bring it back — lime plaster, sandstone, old craftsmen doing old work.

Today the front rooms seat our guests; the kitchen lives where the stables once stood. Nothing about the building shouts. That felt right for the food we wanted to cook.

“We are not reinventing Indian food. We are listening to it more closely.”

The Kitchen

Regional cooking, exact hands.

Our cooks come from the regions they cook — Awadh, Rajasthan, the Malabar Coast, Bengal. We pair their inherited knowledge with the discipline of a tasting-menu kitchen: weighed spices, timed tempering, sauces built and rebuilt until they sing.
